CHRONOSYNCLASTIC INFUNDIBULUM - original

CHRONOSYNCLASTIC INFUNDIBULUM - original

SARA VARADY STUDIOS

'Chronosynclastic infundibulum' is an etching, 48 x 35 cm, one off. Chronosynclastic Infundibulum takes its title from Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s novel The Sirens of Titan. In the story, the term describes a cosmic phenomenon—“those places where all the different kinds of truths fit together.” When the character Winston Niles Rumfoord and his dog, Kazak, enter the chrono-synclastic infundibulum, they become wave phenomena that exist along a spiral stretching from the Sun to the star Betelgeuse. In this state, Rumfoord gains awareness of all past and future events and materializes periodically on different planets. Vonnegut uses this concept to explore fate, free will, interconnectedness, and the human search for meaning within a vast, indifferent universe.

My Chronosynclastic Infundibulum reflects on these same themes—on how multiple truths, timelines, and perspectives can coexist. The work contemplates the space between knowing and uncertainty, and the continuous unfolding of existence beyond linear time.
