"Against the Current x Úgy Szeretlek, Majd Megeszlek" is a 1 metre by 1 metre oil painting that merges two ideas into one piece. It was initially conceived to explore the question: when, if ever, should we give up going against the current? If everyone holds a different point of view, are you right? It’s possible that you are the only one seeing the light that no one else does — but how do you know if you aren’t wrong?
As I worked on the painting, another concept began to take shape, inspired by the Hungarian saying "Úgy szeretlek, majd megeszlek," which translates to "I love you so much, I could eat you." This phrase is commonly used by adults towards children in Hungary, and it was something I heard often as a child. I found it intriguing that this expression could imply a desire to consume those we love, potentially diminishing them. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to see people expressing love in ways that unintentionally drain or harm others. This led me to consider the importance of breaking this pattern—going against the current, so to speak—by shining a light on it.
While reflecting on this concept, I was also watching Attack on Titan, a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The series’ intense imagery and emotional depth had a visual impact on me, subtly influencing the atmosphere and aesthetic of the piece.
With this painting, I aim to raise awareness about how we express love and to encourage a shift in perspective: to live for our loved ones, rather than sacrifice ourselves for them.
