"Zen Buddhism" is an oil painting measuring 183 x 152 cm, inspired by a Zen Buddhist tale that illustrates the impossibility of judging events as inherently good or bad, since their outcomes are always unpredictable.
The story goes:
Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Is that so?”
The next day, the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Is that so?”
The following day, his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Is that so?”
The next day, the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn’t that great!” Again, he said, “Is that so?”
Reflecting on this philosophy, I painted a figure relaxing, eating cereal, and observing her life as if watching television—emotionally detached from the circumstances. This level of detachment is a challenging skill to master, yet it can be invaluable in navigating life’s challenges.
My artwork serves as a reminder of this lesson: to avoid rushing to judgment or spiraling during difficult times, as you can never truly know what the outcome may be.

Yes, we offer international shipping. Fine Art print delivery typically takes 4-6 business days to Europe and 6-8 business days worldwide. Framed prints are delivered internationally within 8-11 business days.
The customer is responsible for all customs duties, clearance and local taxes. We do not currently offer pre-paid duties and taxes; we recommend you estimate the duties based on your average sale price using a calculator such as Simple Duty.

Unframed prints are rolled, and framed prints are shipped flat for safe delivery.
